For academic year 2022/23, up to 8 scholarships are offered exclusively for BASc(FinTech) students with outstanding academic performance:

  • 2 full scholarships, each at the value of up to HK$200,000
  • Entrance scholarships, each at the value of HK$50,000

A FinTech-CS-BBA Student Team Wins a Cash Prize at the Pitching Contest of Innovation Academy, HKU

A team of students from disciplines of Financial Technology, Computer Science & Business Administration successfully pitched their idea of "CityMyth - a gamified AR city tour guide app" and won a cash prize at the Pitching Contest organized by the Innovation Academy, Faculty of Engineering, HKU.

Team members include:

CityMyth is a gamified AR city tour guide app that aims at reinvigorating the travel industry during and after the pandemic. Different from other travel apps, CityMyth integrates customized itinerary, AR experience, and scripted games to familiarize travelers with the stories behind the city and add more amusement. This app fits the needs of several user categories under the current situation of travel restrictions. For city dwellers, they can have a deeper understanding of their own city culture and history, while having an innovative form of entertainment. For travelers, they can utilize their limited travel time more efficiently and have more engagement during the trip. Regarding technology, they make use of Augmented Reality, and Bluetooth Low Energy indoor positioning to realize the app's features.

2021/22 HKU-SCF Scholarship in Financial Technology

HKU-SCF Scholarship in Financial Technology is one of the initiatives of the HKU-SCF FinTech Academy, supported by the Standard Chartered Hong Kong 150th Anniversary Community Foundation, aiming to attract and nurture elite students who will be supporting the future development of FinTech in Hong Kong and other parts of the world.

This year, a total of 11 HKU students with outstanding academic performance in Bachelor of Arts and Sciences in Financial Technology [BASc(FinTech)] , Master of Science in Financial Technology Data Analytics [MSc(FTDA)] and Master of Science in Computer Science (Financial Computing Stream) [MSc(Cs) Financial Computing Stream] have been awarded with scholarships from the Academy. Undergraduate students will receive an entrance scholarship of HK$50,000, while postgraduate students will receive HK$60,000.

Ms Mary Huen, Trustee of the Standard Chartered Hong Kong 150th Anniversary Community Foundation and CEO (Hong Kong) of Standard Chartered Hong Kong presented the scholarship awards to the recipients at a ceremony held on November 3, 2021 at the Hong Kong FinTech Week (Nov 1-5, 2021) at the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre. Our Head of Department, Professor TW Lam together with Professor S.M. Yiu and Dr John Yuen of the Department of Computer Science were also there to share the happy moments with the awardees.

Scholarship recipients for the academic year 2021/22:

  • studying BASc(FinTech) - Fong Hu Zi Zheng, Hui Jing Tung Bernice, Lee Chun Hang, Mok Tsz Him Solomon, Song Xiuxuan and Wu Hoi Ching

Four BASc(FinTech) Year 2 Students Won 1st Runner Up in PwC's HackaDay 2021

The "FinTech Four" team which comprised of four BASc(FinTech) Year 2 students won the 1st runner up at the PwC's HackaDay 2021 - Securing the Cloud "Capture the Flag" (CTF) Cybersecurity Competition held on December 1, 2021 at the Rosewood - Victoria Dockside in Tsimshatsui, HK.

Team members include:

  • TSUI Tsz Ching
  • CHEANG King Hang

The First runner-up prize covers:

  • Three-month internship With PwC Hong Kong’s Cybersecurity & Privacy team or direct entry to PwC’s Superday for final year students
  • Half sponsorship of Offensive Security Certified Professional (OSCP) certification (30-day lab access)
  • Full sponsorship for CREST Practitioner Security Analyst (CPSA) examination

Kok Tin Gan, PwC Hong Kong Cybersecurity and Privacy Partner, commented that "Students are working very hard on the competition. Challenges are entirely new every year and they do capture a lot of flags. Web based and cloud related challenges are the most active categories this year. Students are catching up with the emerging technology and the multi-layer of services provided by public cloud platform."

HKU-SCF FinTech Academy Women Mentorship Programme 2021/22

The HKU-SCF FinTech Academy Women Mentorship Programme 2021/22 was launched on October 6, 2021. 10 women leaders from Standard Chartered and 10 BASc(FinTech) students from the University of Hong Kong were invited to form pairs of mentors and mentees. Ms. Mary HUEN, Co-chair of the HKU-SCF FinTech Academy and Standard Chartered’s Chief Executive Officer for Hong Kong, Ms. Bernadette TSUI, Associate Vice President of the University of Hong Kong, and the Executive Team Members of the Academy, Professor Tak Wah LAM, Professor Siu Ming YIU, Professor Chen LIN and Professor Douglas ARNER were invited to the event.

The commencement of the mentorship programme aims to facilitate the growth and exposure of future women leaders in FinTech. The mentor-mentee pair will meet at least four times within the school year. Throughout the year-long programme, mentees can learn about the financial industry from their mentors, while the mentors can know more about the latest FinTech trends and technologies from their mentees. By then, they can form a two-way learning process.
