The School of Computing and Data Science (https://www.cds.hku.hk/) was established by the University of Hong Kong on 1 July 2024, comprising the Department of Computer Science and Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science and Department of AI and Data Science.

Computing Facilities

The two divisions - AI & Data Science and Computer Science, together, are equipped with state-of-the-art computing facilities.  It has two GPU server farms. The first one consists of 25 compute nodes with 100 pieces of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Ti GPU cards installed, and 6 file servers providing 576 TB usable disk storage in total.  The second one consists of 25 computer nodes with 100 pieces of NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 Ti GPU cards installed, and 6 file servers providing additional 576 TB usable disk storage.  The compute nodes are connected by 10Gb Ethernet switches with 25Gb Ethernet uplinks to the file servers.  The two GPU server farms have theoretical peak performance of 35.5 TFLOPS and 42.0 TFLOPS, respectively.

The two divisions, together, have also has over 60 Linux servers, including 56 Dell PowerEdge rackmount and tower servers, 9 HP ProLiant rackmount servers. The Linux servers are installed with Ubuntu Linux operating system, Apache servers, Tomcat servers, MySQL database servers, MATLAB, X2Go servers, and various software development tools.

The two divisions, together, have four general-purpose computer laboratories for teaching.  These computing laboratories have over 100 PCs with Intel Core i5 processors. These PCs are installed with Microsoft Windows 10 operating system. They run a versatile set of software, including Microsoft Office, Microsoft Edge, Microsoft Visual Studio, Microsoft .NET Framework, Atom, Code::Blocks, Eclipse IDE, Google Chrome, IBM Rational Software Architect, MATLAB, Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, NetBeans IDE, Oracle JDK, PDF-Xchange Editor, Tomcat server, X2Go client, and various language compilers.  Besides, the two divisions, together, have two special-purpose computer laboratories for teaching, namely, Cyber Security Laboratory and Visualization and Multimedia Laboratory.  The Cyber Security Laboratory has specific hardware and software for teaching the subject, whereas the Visualization and Multimedia Laboratory is equipped with various virtual reality systems, such as HTC VIVE, Microsoft HoloLens, Oculus Rift, etc., and an OptiTrack Prime 13 motion tracking system.

All computers in the two divisions are connected by a Gigabit Ethernet backbone, which is connected to the Internet via the HKU Campus Network.

University staff and students can also use computers in the Learning Commons, the PC Laboratory of Faculty of Engineering, and computing facilities and WiFi service provided by Information Technology Services.
